Astrology, particularly from a humanistic perspective, seeks to illuminate the individual’s path toward self-understanding and personal growth. While an astrologer functions as a guide or interpreter, the question of bias—whether it can be eliminated and should be—is nuanced.
Astrology is inherently interpretive, and interpretations are shaped by the astrologer’s own experiences, beliefs, and worldview. This reality raises the question: Can an astrologer truly be unbiased? To some degree, no human being can completely detach from their personal framework. However, the real focus should not be on striving for sterile objectivity but on cultivating self-awareness, transparency, and respect for the client’s unique journey.
The Illusion of Complete Neutrality
In striving to avoid bias, astrologers and their clients may fall into the trap of assuming they can or should leave their personal experiences and subjectivity entirely at the door. Such a pursuit often backfires, creating readings that feel impersonal or disconnected. As a humanistic astrologer, my approach, first and foremost, values the shared humanity between myself and my client, recognizing that my role is not to dictate but to offer insights that resonate with the client’s sense of truth.
A More Nuanced Goal: Mindful Engagement
Instead of chasing the impossible ideal of full impartiality, an astrologer must aim to be a mindful witness. This approach begins with an awareness of personal bias. By acknowledging their own cultural, philosophical, or personal predispositions, the astrologer can consciously work to ensure these influences do not overshadow the reading, or disrespect the client. This level of self-awareness is crucial to maintaining the integrity and connection of the interpretive process.
A client-centered interpretation is equally essential. The astrologer must prioritize the client’s perspective. A client-centered interpretation ensures that insights and reflections align with the client’s lived reality rather than imposing external narratives or assumptions upon them. This approach fosters a sense of relevance and connection, allowing the reading to resonate on a deeply personal level.
Active listening ties these elements together. By remaining attuned to the client’s needs and concerns, the astrologer avoids projecting their ideas about what the client “should” think, feel, or do. This creates a space of trust and collaboration, where the client’s voice takes center stage and the reading becomes a shared journey of discovery.
The Role of Desire in Objectivity
Interestingly, the desire to be unbiased can itself become a subtle form of bias. If an astrologer’s focus is on appearing neutral, they are prioritizing their image over the client’s needs. A balanced approach embraces the astrologer’s humanity while maintaining integrity, professionalism, and humility.
Ultimately, humanistic astrology thrives on authenticity, humility, and integrity. The astrologer’s role is not to erase their subjective lens but to refine it into a tool for fostering meaningful, empowering dialogue. To create a truly valuable astrology reading or consultation, pay less attention to eliminating bias and more attention to creating space for the client’s voice to shine through.
