Thoughts Following My Total Knee Replacement
We don’t realize the constant attention and effort it takes to care for ourselves until the simple act of getting out of bed or walking to the kitchen becomes an overwhelming effort. When we find ourselves in a position where others step in to do what we’ve always done for ourselves, we experience a deep internal shift. This is a profoundly humbling and revealing experience.
My total knee replacement surgery is a lesson in patience and trust. I must trust in my body’s ability to heal and trust in those who’ve taken on assisting with my care.
Both my boyfriend Dave and my daughter Angela have been a godsend in offering me help in ways I didn’t even know I would need. I know it will return but for now, I long for the ease of my former independence. The true surprise in the situation has been the clarity of seeing how much we each carry and care for ourselves every single day without noticing or giving it a second thought.
The experience of this time has turned my eyes to the astrological dynamics of caregiving and how the different elements and signs express care and, equally important, how they receive it. There’s a quiet strength in the practical care that comes from the Earth signs, particularly Virgo, and a softer, more emotional nurturing from Water signs, particularly Cancer. Both of these signs have shown up in in profound ways through the support of my loved ones during this time.
Dave, with Uranus, Mars, and Pluto in Virgo in his fourth house, has a powerful propensity to offer practical care for those he sees as family members. Virgo is the sign of service, the kind we see in small, detailed tasks that may seem quite ordinary and yet are crucial for caretaking and supporting others. Dave has ensured my comfort, making sure medications are taken on time, and that the house is tidy and organized so I don’t have to worry about such things. This good man has been grounding, steady, and efficient, wrapped in the quiet efficiency that a 4th house Virgo brings to the service of those in the home.
With her eighth house Cancer Sun, my daughter takes on a different role that is more emotional and intuitive. Cancer’s form of nurturing holds space for emotions and the internal process that accompanies physical recovery. She has an automatic sense of when silence or conversation is needed. She knows when and how to offer warmth. The eighth house brings depth to her nurturing, a willingness to sit with the discomfort and the messiness of healing, without the need to shy away from the deep emotional undercurrents that come with it.
Experiencing the balance of these two forms of care is a beautiful thing and yet, even with this beautiful balance, there is another layer to the story.
How easy is it for one to receive care? As someone with a chart heavily weighted by Fire, I know how difficult it can be to accept help or even admit to needing it. Fire signs are naturally independent, and the act of being cared for feels deeply uncomfortable to Fire. Fire that wants to keep moving, to push through and handle everything on its own.
There are so many things for each of us to learn in this lifetime. For many, or perhaps all, learning to surrender is an important part of what we do during this lifetime.
I am actively working on this life learning. I am learning to surrender, to accept the love, support, and care that is offered without feeling the need to do everything for myself long before I’m ready.
And then there is the issue of control. Trusting that others can step in and handle things is also a massive difficulty. I know that this process is softening me in ways I wasn’t expecting. I must remind myself that even as independence is vitally important, there’s also kindness and beauty in being able to receive care with grace. Allowing others to step into that role without feeling like I’m losing a part of myself is a gift to both of us.
When we are physically able, we go about our days thinking very little of all the energy we spend maintaining the body we live in. But when we’re in need, the smallest tasks suddenly loom large. Here we have the opportunity to appreciate the quiet labor behind each detail. And perhaps more importantly, we come to allow those we love to step in when we can’t do it ourselves.
